Taking a break this week
Hi everyone, I was writing a blog post, and then just as I was about to publish it, I realized I had already written on the topic! And you know what, the post written 3 years ago was funnier! It was about Plaque and Sack, when you loudly and publicly celebrate a board member, giving them a plaque or some other token of appreciation, in a scheme to get them to step off the board; it boosts their ego and/or allows them to save face, plus the public recognition lessens their chance of burning stuff down when they leave.
Anyway, five hours of work down the drain. But it made me realize, I think all of us deserve a break! I don't know why I've been expecting myself to function as I've always had, when I've been under a great deal of stress, as has everyone else. This new book has been fun, bringing a whirlwind of new speaking engagements. But it's also a significant amount of work (and my publisher is already pushing me to think about another book!)
I've never written a post before only to find out that I had already rambled on the exact topic earlier. Let this serve as a reminder to give yourself grace. And some rest. I'm going to take it easy this month. I hope you will too. The holidays are coming up. I highly encourage leaders in our sector to give your team the last two weeks of this month off, without forcing them to use Paid Time Off days, if possible (and make exceptions for those who want to work and take time off another time). Everyone is could use it. The amount of anxiety everyone's been holding has been untenable.
I'll be back next week, before taking a break from this blog until 1/6/2026. Have a good one, everyone. Take naps and stay hydrated, and if you make some silly mistake, just remember that you're human, and that no matter what you do, you're amazing...and probably still vastly more competent than the majority of people in power right now.
Take care of yourself, you awesome, brilliant, talented, good-looking unicorn, you!
